Why Downloads Fail – Part 5 – Not Enough Space on Disk
Downloads can fail because the target drive runs out of space to write the file to the disk.
You’d be surprised how much this happens with large downloads.
Depending upon the tools you are using to download, and your choice of operating system, you may need more than two-times the amount of drive space available than the original size of the download.
This drive space requirement stems from how your download manager stores data before reassembling it and writing it the desired location on your drive. Some tools will store an entire copy of download in your local /tmp directory, until “cleanup” time.
We suggest to our customers that no less than 2.5x the download size be available on disk before you start the download. So if its a 5GB DVD image you want, make sure you have 12.5GB of space on your drive before starting your download. Just to be safe.
If the first download fails, for this or one of the earlier mentioned reasons, make sure to check your disk space available before starting again.
